I accept Jesus as a historical figure and I also accept the humanity of his core teachings. I don't agree with your argument about accepting (or otherwise) what he says about himself because what we read in the Bible is, of course, actually what someone else wrote that he said about himself - it doesn't come directly from his lips. The book "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel was written by an atheist investigative reporter that got mad because his wife became a Christian. (This is the same guy who broke the story about the Ford Pinto exploding gas tanks.) So he went around trying to disprove the existence of Jesus. But what he found showed that Jesus was exactly who he said he was. He converted himself through his investigations. I read it two months ago, and actually wasn't really happy about it, for the same reasons you mention in your article. I had some nice, comfortable beliefs in God, and thought there was no way to "know" about Jesus one way or another. I thought to be a Christian means you have to have blind faith. To me, that's an intellectual cop-out. So, I don't do blind faith. Turns out I don't have to - and since the proof is so persuasive, I don't really have a choice but to become Christian.
